Do I Really Need A Counsellor? Do I Really Need Therapy?
It's a good question! Do you really need a Counsellor?
Needing something tends to carry this implication that you can't live without it.
As a humanistic Counsellor, I believe that you already have everything you need within... my role is somewhat different to giving you what you need! After all, nobody needs a drill, a drill is just a tool! They most likely need a hole!
The trick is to find a drill that feels good in the hand, has enough power to get the job done and will leave you feeling like you’ve accomplished what you set out to do!
And as a Counsellor, I'm actually looking for that amazing moment when the question becomes, "do you really need a Counsellor... anymore!".
The powerful subtle shift occurs when you realise that you’ve got this! You have enough tools and self-understanding to be able to navigate the choppy waters by yourself. We’re not looking to make you dependent on us, we’re seeking to help you find your own self-confidence, enough to go it alone, under your own steam.
Because you've reached that point where your own confidence and self-worth are strong enough to navigate your own path by yourself. Counselling is absolutely about endings, not dependency.
In the meantime, we're working together to expand the space around your thoughts and behaviours. To talk about the black and white that's driving you in the now, stepping back and looking at where there might be other options, other paths, alternatives not taken or explored before.
In my opinion, you might never “need” a Counsellor... you’re most likely wanting some peace, or understanding, hope or support in finding your better tomorrow.
Having a Counsellor alongside you when things get difficult can offer you that self space, enough to figure out what you DO need and how to get it. That comfortable tool that you can trust enough to get you to where you want to be.
In that sense, it's not the Counselling that you need, but the lifelong benefits and rewards of offering yourself the opportunity to work it all out.
Nobody needs the "thing", they most likely need the results!
With warmth,
James
